@idub42, you should be happy that other people are showing an interest in your culture, i would imagine that most people who are getting this type of art work have an interest in the culture they are getting a tattoo from, and want to know more about it to get something that has eternal meaning to them! think about it!

@zizzilock Im maori from NZ and although i love the fact that foreigners like our tattoos I personally think that unless you have some polynesian or maori blood you should not get our traditional tattoos because its our identity a mark with our family and traditions engraved on it,an Identity to say to the world we are polynesian, would you scar your face like in africa and look like an african when your not because you like it?

The origin of tattooing to us is of divine command. Ta’aroa the supreme god sent two of his sons. These tow gods taught the people the spiritual and the social lore which made up the traditional fabric of our society. They tattooed all the living creatures, thus giving them specxial colors & markings. These two gods are said to ha e come to the people and said…

You must become tattooed, so that you become beautiful. Everything will pass after death. Only tghe tattoos will remain; they will outlive you. A human will leave all and everything behind on earth. All his/her belongings; only the tattoos will be taken to the grave…

I have a question. I am white surfer and have always loved polynesian culture and its concepts. Although i am not directly polynesian I have always felt a close bond with nature, the ocean and my family. I would love to get a traditional polynesian tattoo designed for me, almost as a way to pay my respects. What are peoples views on this matter? Good, bad, offensive etc?

fuck idub42! faka how darr you disrespect our culture. you fake, fuck samoans! get off out islands denn! ai kukae kanaka kamoa keto!

In response to IDUB42 post, learn polynesian history you idiot. Then you will see that it is tradition that all polynesian did. The only reason your culture still is strong is because the western world influences did impact Samoa like hawaii, and your not in strategical position for the military. So before you crack your mouth THINK>

Wow I’m truly astounded at the level of ignorant comments about Polynesians here. Absolute despicable display and lack of knowledgeable History. “Bold Tattoo” indeed Keone, Kanaka Maoli Kakau is one of the strongest Tattoo’s in all of Polynesia, not to denigrate other Polynesians, but Kanaka Maoli patterns are extremely intricate in it’s geometric patterns which backs the notion that the Kanaka Maoli understood mathematical positions and placements, which is why they excelled in Voyaging.

Shameful on those that hate on other polynesians…. The video is showing the different styles the different cultures and the ways of the people and what it means in each person about where they came from and who they represent shameful that some of you polynesians act as if your the only islander with pride. Polynesians all have pride but some of you ignorants today tend to think your the last standing proud poly? Well what a lonely person you must be.. XD
multinesia thanks for your vids

I’m Samoan and it’s embarassing when other Samoans start making these patronizing claims, as if we’re better than anyone because we have strong tattooing history. I’m proud of the Hawaiians reviving this part of their culture, and to the Samoans who are so prideful that they create divisions among our closest kin, grow the hell up.

What’s with all this rivalry? Open your mind and respect others.

i still love my maori design but much respect to all the other traditional polynesian tattoo artists all the south pacific brothers n sisters and my brown peeps in hawaii, thats one thing the white man can neva take away from us.

Whether its hawaiian, fijian, moari, samoan or whatever the culture may be…the thing that fascinates me about polynesian tattoo is the artists vision. Respect is definitely expected when obtaining a tattoo ANY sort, but it does frustrate me when people compare or even try to compete designs!! It would be humble to understand the variety of cultural body art and consider the concept as SKILL!!

Uhi are older than Samoa .. used by Uenuku in the realm of Te Rarohenga and were brought to Hawaiiki by Mataora. Where is Hawaiiki??? .. well it could be Hawai’i or it could be Savai’i depending on how you wanna say it.
