The New York Public Library holds a wealth of unexpected sources of inspiration for artists and designers—from vintage valentines and textile patterns, to fabric samples and turn-of-the-century menus from around the world. For this online-only miniseries, “Design by the Book,” the Library partnered with the leading design blog Design*Sponge to invite five New York City-based artists to sift through our collections in search of inspiration. Stay tuned for future episodes as the artists, who range from a glassblower to a letterpress printer, create unique works inspired by what they found; special guest Isaac Mizrahi will also join us to share his sources of inspiration. Try Looking Through a Tattoo Design Book Before You Choose a Design

If you are considering having a tattoo done you may want to look through a tattoo design book before you make your choice. There are literally tens of thousands different styles of tattoos available and you really want to take your time when making a decision, as it is permanent. Where do you find these books, what are the benefits of looking through them, and what can you tell from them are all good things to know before you head to the tattoo parlor.

Finding a tattoo design book is quite easy. You can search online and there are thousand that you can buy and download directly on to your computer. You might be a bit surprised but you can also find these types of books in your local library and if your library does not have one they can get them for you from a nearby library so don’t be afraid to ask. Many book stores and department stores that have a book section also offer these tattoo books so you have many options when you need to find tattoo design choices.

One of the best places to find a design book is at the tattoo parlor that you have chosen to complete your tattoo. This will give you a chance to see all the tattoos that the artists there are capable of doing. You can also see what type of work they do and if it is in fact the quality of work you are looking for. Almost every artist will have a book with their tattoo designs in them so make sure you ask to see it.

Another really good reason to look through a design book is that many times people see tattoos on other people that they would also like to have, however if you cannot explain it the tattoo artist will have a difficult time recreating the design. If you can find the picture or the likeness in a design book then your tattoo artist should have no problems duplicating the design. This will make the artist’s job a lot easier and you will be much more pleased with the results.

Once you have decided on a choice for your tattoo you may have some questions about the actual process. First let me say it does hurt. The degree of pain really depends on your pain tolerance and many find it just uncomfortable and others will find it intolerable. Once you have chosen your design the artist will place the design in a machine that will transfer the design on to a special type of paper that will be pressed against your skin. This will leave an impression of the design on your skin so you can see what it is going to look like and then the artist will trace it and fill in the design with color. So when you are looking for the type of tattoo you want start with a tattoo design book, you can find them anywhere, they will help you choose your artist and they will help guarantee that you will like the outcome.
